Mother Eloise Daley was born in Charleston, South Carolina to William and Eloise Sanders; the youngest daughter of seven children. She moved to New York City at a young age with her oldest Sister after their father passed away. She lived in Manhattan, the Bronx and then finally Queens. She was married in the 1940’s; and through that union ‘reared,’ as she liked to say, five children: Vivien Lunsford, John Daley, Jr., Janice Wilson, James (Larry) Daley, and Kenneth (Malachi) Daley…doing all she could to make sure that they had opportunities to succeed in life.

Mother worked hard. She went from factory work; to being a short order cook; to working over 30 years at the Bronx State Hospital/Bronx Psychiatric Center, as a Dietician. Because of her belief that continuing education was a necessary part of everyday life, she was always in learning and teaching mode…spiritually and academically, and received many certificates of achievement and awards. She also received her AA in liberal arts and psychology from Bronx Community College in her later years; doing so well that she was selected for the ‘Cumulative Deans List’ multiple times from 1974-1977.

‘Weezie,’ as many fondly called her, was quite social and usually the life of the party. She enjoyed being with family and friends, entertaining, and traveling. Wherever she’d go and whatever she was a part of, she’d put her heart and soul into it; adding a pinch of wit, charm, comedy, and a hint of the dramatics. She was a singer; loved to dance; was a profound writer; and loved acting. She enjoyed pursuing anything that was mentally challenging, such as word games, puzzles, and playing cards.

Due to her compassion for the welfare of her fellowman, especially children, she involved herself in whatever areas she could be of assistance. She was a Missionary and Choir Member, serving in multiple auxiliaries in her Church. She was an active member and volunteer at the JSPOA Senior Center on Rockaway Boulevard. She even rubbed shoulders with civil service-oriented high profile people such as Rev Al Sharpton, and Rev Floyd Flake, to name a few.

Mother was quite an independent woman, never wanting to be a burden to anyone. When sickness came, she fought hard to stay in control of her life, preparing for the day when she would no longer be able too. She would say, I’m doing the best I can ‘holding on to God’s unchanging hand!’ She endeavored to live life on her own terms…until she couldn’t. Yes, Mother did it her way!

Sorrowfully, all of her siblings and four of her five children passed on before her, but as Mother would say, ‘it’s all in God’s hands!’ She leaves behind many beloved ones to cherish her precious memories, and it was her hope that her daughter, seven grandchildren, six great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild would continue to follow those values she endeavored to live by through holding on to God’s unchanging hand as well. Mother Daley also leaves behind; her nieces, nephews, a host of other relatives, and her beloved church family and friends. She will be greatly missed, but we are grateful that she is now at peace and present with the Lord.
